What It Feels Like to Pray Alone for Your Marriage
There’s something tender and quiet about prayer, which is intimate, sacred, and powerful, but when you find yourself praying alone for your marriage while your husband sleeps in the next room, scrolls through his phone, or is completely passive about it, it can sometimes feel lonely.
I remember many times when I wanted my husband to join me in prayers, hold hands, and lift our voices together on behalf of our family, and some nights, if I’m honest, I wondered: Does it even make a difference?
I’d look at other couples at church who seemed to pray and worship together so naturally, and my heart would ache. The enemy often used those moments to whisper lies: “You’re the only one in this marriage, your prayers are useless, and Nothing will change.”
But I know my prayer is never wasted. Even when I prayed alone, I wasn’t truly alone. Romans 8:26 says, “The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” That means heaven itself was joining in those midnight prayers. I wasn’t the only one carrying the weight of my family; God’s Spirit was right there, lifting it with me.
Over time, my prayers began to make extraordinary things happen in my home and marriage. Instead of begging God to change my husband immediately, I started asking Him to change me first: my patience, my words, and my reactions.
I began to pray for seeds of faith to be planted in my husband’s heart in ways I might not even see. Slowly, my prayers stopped feeling like desperate cries in the dark and started becoming acts of trust, like completely placing my marriage into God’s hands over and over again.
If you’re in this season, I want you to know: your prayers matter. Every tear you shed, every scripture you declare, and every night you choose to pray instead of giving up, God sees it, and while you may not see answers immediately, heaven is already moving.
So don’t stop; don’t grow weary. You may be the only one praying for your marriage right now, but you are not praying alone. God is listening, the Spirit is interceding, and Jesus Himself is at the right hand of the Father speaking on your behalf (Romans 8:34).
Scripture to Hold On To: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” — James 5:16 (NIV)
A Prayer for You: Lord, remind me that my prayers are never wasted. Strengthen my faith when I feel alone, and let my quiet intercessions be seeds that bear fruit in my marriage. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
